MISTAKES: The Lord will never abandon you

By Father Dennis Meinen
View from the scooter

A woman was walking down the street when she heard a voice yell, “Stop! If you take one more step, you’ll be killed!” The woman stopped, and in seconds a brick fell right at her feet. A few minutes later, as she was preparing to cross the street, she heard the voice again: “Halt!  Don’t cross the street now!” An out-of-control beer truck careened around the corner and didn’t even slow as it ran the red light.
Deeply shaken, the woman asked, “Who are you?” “I’m your guardian angel,” the voice replied.  “And I imagine you have some questions for me.”

“You bet I do!” she said.  “Where were you on my wedding day?”

Mistakes! We’ve all made tons of them, especially if we’re disabled.  When did I last take my medicine? Will my caregiver discover the latest bruise(s) on my body and take steps to further restrict me? And the all-important question: Does my scent lead others to believe I was tip-toeing through the tulips, or wallowing somewhere else?

Have you ever talked to the Lord and told Him your worries and fears? So, as Jesus has told us so often, “Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find.  Knock and it will be opened to you.” Face your mistakes and trust that the Lord will never abandon you!

Occasionally folks here who still drive their cars discuss coping with new-fangled things like outdoor cameras that watch how obediently they drive and mail them a fine-to-be-paid if they slip up. Did you hear about the anonymous priest who was driving his van when he saw the flash of a traffic camera? He figured that his picture had been taken for exceeding the limit even though he knew that he was not speeding. Just to be sure, he went around the block and passed the same spot, driving even more slowly, but again the camera flashed. Now he began to think that this was quite funny, so he drove even slower as he passed the area once more, but the traffic camera again flashed.

He tried a fourth and fifth time with the same results and was now laughing as the camera flashed while he rolled past at a snail's pace. Two weeks later, I (I mean “he”) got five tickets in the mail for driving without a seat belt. It reminds me of a quotation by a famous man, a best known scientist and intellectual of all time by the name of Albert Einstein. Einstein gave a brilliant definition of insanity: “Endlessly repeating the same process, and hoping for a different result.”

While on the subject of insanity at work...

Two factory workers were talking. "I know how to get some time off from work." said the man. "How do you think you will do that?" said the other one. He proceeded to show her...by climbing up to the rafters, and hanging upside down. The boss walked in, saw the worker hanging from the ceiling, and asked him what on earth he was doing? "I'm a light bulb" answered the guy. "I think you need some time off," said the boss. So, the man jumped down and walked out of the factory. The second worker began walking out too. The boss asked her where did she think she was going?

"Home. I can't work in the dark."
