Bishop announces retirements, reappointments and new assignments
Bishop R. Walker Nickless, Bishop of Sioux City, has announced the retirement of 8 priests and the reappointment and/or reassignment of 29 priests. These appointments are effective July 14, 2009.
Father Laurence Burns, pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Early and St. Joseph Parish in Schaller, will retire.
A native of Emmetsburg, he attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and Mt. St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque. Father Burns was ordained by Bishop Mueller on May 30, 1964, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. Father Burns has served at St. Joseph Parish, Sioux City; St. Patrick Parish, Estherville; St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, Sioux City; Sacred Heart Parish, Templeton; Blessed Sacrament Parish, Sioux City; St. Lawrence Parish, Carroll, and was a member of the Webster Country Team Ministry in Fort Dodge.
Father Emmet L. Farrell, pastor of Saint Jude’s Shrine of the West in San Diego, Calif., in the Diocese of San Diego, will retire.
A native of Ayshire, he attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., and Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque. He was ordained June 5, 1965, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. In the diocese, he served at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Fonda; St. Lawrence Parish and Kuemper High School, Carroll; and St. Joseph Parish, Le Mars. He has had assignments outside of the diocese since 1968 including director of the Sanctuary Program for the Maryknoll/Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America in Marknoll, N.Y.; and served in parishes in Peru, California, Illinois and Texas.
Father Merle F. Kollasch, pastor of Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Pocahontas and Saint Margaret Parish in Rolfe, will retire.
A native of Whittemore, he attended Loras College in Dubuque and American College – Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium. He also attended and earned an M.S. Ed. Degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.
He was ordained May 30, 1964, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
He has served at Bishop Heelan High School, Sioux City; St. Joseph Parish, Granville; Spalding High School, Granville; Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, West Bend; and St. Casmir and St. Francis of Assisi Parishes, Sioux City. He also served as vocations director for the diocese. Outside of the diocese, he served as vice rector/spiritual director at American College – Catholic University of Louvain, Louvain, Belgium, and spiritual director at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.
Father Lawrence L. McCarty, pastor of Saint Mary Parish in Sac City and Saint Mary Parish in Auburn, will retire.
A native of Perry, he attended Iowa State University in Ames and Loras College and Mount St. Bernard Seminary both in Dubuque.
He was ordained on June 1, 1963, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.

Msgr. Kenneth A. Seifried, V.F., pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Milford and Vicar Forane of the Northwest Deanery, will retire.
A native of Manson, he graduated from Loras College and Mount St. Bernard Seminary, both in Dubuque. He also attended and earned graduate degrees from the following institutions: M.S.Ed. at Creighton, Omaha; M.A. at Azusa Pacific University, Los Angeles, Calif.; M.Div. at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Long Island, N.Y.
He was ordained by Bishop Mueller on June 1, 1963 at Cathedral of the Epiphany. He was awarded the prelate of honor in 1997, receiving the title of monsignor.
He has served at Kuemper High School, Carroll; Emmetsburg Catholic Schools and St. Joseph Parish in Granville. He also served for a number of years as a U.S. military chaplain.
Father John M. Thomas, pastor of Saint Ann Parish in Vail and Saint John Parish in Arcadia, will retire.
A native of Rock Rapids, he attended Jordan Seminary in Menominee, Mich., Holy Cross Seminary in LaCrosse, Wis., and Mt. St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1966, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.

This Boone native attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines and Loras College in Dubuque before completing seminary studies at St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland.
He was ordained to the priesthood on May 6, 1978, at Sacred Heart Church in Boone.

This native of Hospers attended Creighton University in Omaha and the Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium.

Father Peter Duc Hung Nguyen has been reappointed as pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Ruthven and Sacred Heart Parish in Ayrshire.
He was born in Vietnam and then his family moved to Boone. He was educated at Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa and St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.
He was ordained June 7, 1997, at Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll.

Prior to his arrival in the Diocese of Sioux City in 2001, he served as rector of the Opus Spiritus Sancti Philosophy Study House in Janampet, Eluru, India and as the OSS house superior and pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Pambra, Kerala, India. In the diocese, he has served at Holy Spirit in Carroll and St. Mary Parish in Willey.
Father William J. Vit, Jr., from Administrator of the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, to Rector of the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
A native of Fort Dodge, he was educated at the University of Iowa, Cedar Falls; Conception Seminary in Conception, Mo., and North American College, Rome.
He was ordained to the priesthood on July 2, 2005, at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
Prior to his service at Cathedral, he was parochial vicar at St. Mary’s in Storm Lake.
Father Matthew Hewitt, parochial vicar of the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, will serve as administrator of Saint James Parish in Le Mars.
Born in Marshalltown, he was raised in Sioux City. He attended Creighton University in Omaha, St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind., and North American College Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.
Father Hewitt was ordained to the priesthood on June 26, 2004, at the Cathedral.
In his service at Cathedral, along with serving as parochial vicar, he also offered sacramental ministry to the Hispanic community. He also previously served at St. Mary's Parish and High School in Storm Lake.
Father Shane A. Deman, from graduate studies at the North American College in Rome, to Parochial Vicar of Holy Trinity Parish in Webster County.
This native of Sioux City was educated at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., and North American College in Rome.

Father Thomas J. Flanagan, who was serving in special ministry outside the Diocese of Sioux City, will now serve as Parochial Vicar of Saint Joseph Parish in Milford.
A native of Rock Valley, he attended Loras College in Dubuque and Canisianum University of Innsbruck in Innsbruck, Austria. He also attended and earned graduate degrees from the following institutions: M.A./Music – St. Joseph College in Rennselear, Ind., and Ed.D./Counseling – University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.
He was ordained to the priesthood on January 25, 1974 in Innsbruck, Austria.
In the Diocese of Sioux City, Father Flanagan served at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Sioux City; St. Patrick Parish, Estherville; Bishop Garrigan High School, Algona; and Briar Cliff College, Sioux City.
Father Brent C. Lingle, from parochial vicar and parochial administrator of Sacred Heart Parish in Spencer, to parochial vicar of the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
This native of Sioux City was educated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minn., and St. Meinrad School of Theology in Meinrad, Ind.
He was ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 2007, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City.
Father Timothy A. Friedrichsen, while remaining parochial vicar of Saint Rose of Lima Parish in Denison, will now serve as Parochial Vicar of Saint Ann Parish in Vail.
A native of Schleswig, he attended Divine Word College in Epworth, Iowa; St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind; and American College Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium. He also earned a graduate degree, S.T.D., from American College Catholic University of Louvain in Louvain, Belgium.
He was ordained to the priesthood on July 21, 1984, at St. Mary Church in Mapleton.
Father Friedrichsen has served at Holy Spirit Parish and Kuemper High School, Carroll; St. Mary Parish, Willey; Briar Cliff College, Sioux City; Nativity Parish, Sioux City; and St. Joseph Parish, Struble. Outside the diocese, he served on the faculty at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Father Jeremy J. Wind, while remaining parochial vicar of Saint Mary Parish in Storm Lake to parochial vicar of Saint Joseph Parish in Schaller.
This native of Jefferson was educated at Iowa State University, Ames; Conception Seminary College in Conception, Mo., and St. Meinrad School of Theology, St. Meinrad, Ind.
He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop R. Walker Nickless on June 28, 2008, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany.
